The Most Common Layout Mistakes We See as Interior Designers

A beautiful room can still feel completely off if the layout is not working. This is one of the most common challenges we see, especially in open-concept homes where multiple spaces need to flow together.

The biggest issue is furniture that is pushed too far apart. It may feel intuitive to line everything along the walls to create more space, but it actually does the opposite. It makes the room feel disconnected and less inviting. Pulling furniture in and creating a defined conversation area immediately makes the space feel more intentional. If a room is long or galley like, break it into zones or areas that work for you and your family.

Another common mistake is choosing a rug that is too small. This is one of those details that changes everything. A rug should anchor the furniture, not float in the middle of it. When the scale is right, the entire room feels more cohesive and grounded.

Traffic flow is another key factor. Walkways should feel natural and unobstructed. When furniture blocks pathways or creates awkward movement, the space becomes frustrating to live in. A well-designed layout considers how you move through the room just as much as how it looks.

Lighting placement also impacts layout more than people realize. If lighting is not positioned where it is actually needed, the room can feel dim or unbalanced. Layered lighting helps define zones and adds function to each area.

There is also a tendency to overfill a space. More furniture does not equal better design. In fact, editing is often the key to making a room feel elevated. Giving pieces room to breathe allows each element to stand out and contribute to the overall design.

At Fitz Haus, layout is always the starting point. Before selecting finishes or furnishings, we focus on how the space functions. When the layout is right, everything else falls into place much more naturally.

A well-designed layout should feel effortless. You should not have to think about it. It should simply work.
